GOOD START TO THE SEASON. PICKENS DUAL
West track and field kicked off the 2019 campaign on Wednesday night at home in the Wolverine's Den in a "rust buster" against Pickens County and Fellowship Christian.
An afternoon that started out breezy and finished calm but cold didn't deter our squad from trying to warm things up with some hot performances.
Auburn signee Kyle Brown, West's most decorated athlete at the 2018 state track meet, showed he is in good early season form, having competed successfully in several indoor meets already this year. His 158'-10" throw in the discus establishes a new school record, bettering his own throw from last year. Kyle also won the shot with a near personal best throw of 50'-9".
Several freshmen made impressive starts to their high school track careers, landing on the West all time top 10 performance lists their first time on the track. Middle school sprint star Grace Mangan stepped up to high school competition in championship form. She was a triple winner on the night. Her 12.82 100M dash lands #2 on the West all time list. It took only 26.70 for Grace to snatch her 2nd individual victory of the night becoming 5th fastest in school history. Both times would have placed her in the top half of the field in the boy's races! She closed out her night with a :62 split on West's winning 4X400M relay team. Another notable freshman was Brandon Nyandoro who took first in the 400M dash and ran his first ever 800M race placing 5th. The future is bright for these 2 freshmen phenoms.
The other male athletes who secured new early season spots on the all time list include: Reece Cato - 3200M, Stephen Graffius - 1600M, John Mark Harter 110H, Abraham Camara 300H & Long Jump, Owen Holland 300H, Luke Nordin - High Jump, Joe Davenport - Shot, Sai Donti - Triple Jump
On the girl's side, new top 10 marks belong to:
Katie Jordan - Shot, Abi Robertson - Discus, Makaya Fofana - Triple Jump
Wolverine track athletes will be back in action next Saturday in the Archer Invitational. West is allowed only 3 entrants / event in this large meet, so we won't be in full force for this meet at the site of the Sectional meet in April where we will have athletes attempting to qualify for the state meet in Rome, GA.
